My School Decided to go Virtual: What Now?

Yesterday, many major school districts including LAUSD and SDUSD announced that they would go virtual for the 2020-2021 school year.

Some parents were relieved that their children would be safe.

Some parents relived the last few months of the 2019-2020 school year and wondered-- will I be able to do that again full time?

My answer is, don't worry!

Everyone will be better prepared this year.

At the end of 2019-2020, teachers and school administration were given no time to prepare. They just dropped everything, and did not return to their classrooms. There was no time to pack, so student passwords, forgotten lunches, and who knows what else were locked up, and teachers were given sometimes a week or a month to prepare with little resources. Administration didn't have the time or money to bring in the help the teachers needed, as they were surprised as well.

2020-2021 will be different!

The entire summer, teachers have been networking with each other, finding out ways to get Google certification, going to voluntary training, and asking people around the nation for resources to improve their teaching for the school year. School technology coaches have been developing and delivering training, and gathering the latest on technological trends. School Administration are developing plans for full-time teaching, holding students accountable, but also ensuring students have all the tools they need for education to be equitable and rigorous.

You are better prepared! You are now experienced in helping your child navigate distance learning, and you had time to reflect. When you get back on that horse, you will be better than you were the last time!

So don't fret. Distance Learning was brand new, the first time, and we all had hiccups, but now everyone will be a little more prepared.
